Rhinoplasty FAQs

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reports that in 2007, the average cost of rhinoplasty was $4,357; this figure accounts for surgeon/physician fees only. Surgical facility, anesthesia, location where the procedure is being performed, and popularity of the surgeon were not factored in for the price of rhinoplasty.

What is the rhinoplasty recovery time?

After the first week or so following nose surgery, most of the pain, discomfort, swelling, and bruising will have subsided. However; it will take several weeks before feeling back to normal.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

The first 24 hours following rhinoplasty is typically the most painful. After that, there is usually pressure and a stuffy nose sensation.

What are the rhinoplasty risks?

Rhinoplasty risks are not common, but may include infection, nose bleed, swelling, bruising, numbness, reaction to anesthesia, and need for a secondary nose surgery (rhinoplasty revision).

Does rhinoplasty leave scars?

If a plastic surgeon utilizes the closed rhinoplasty technique, the surgical scars should be concealed. But if open rhinoplasty is utilized, the patient may have a few small visible scars that may eventually fade over time.

Are there any age restrictions for rhinoplasty patients?

Nose surgery, typically, should only be performed on patients who have gone through puberty. Most surgeons will not perform rhinoplasty on anyone under the age of 13, while there are other surgeons who will refuse anyone under the age of 16 years old.

What is the difference between "open" and "closed" rhinoplasty?

An open rhinoplasty consists of a surgeon cutting the skin between the nostrils, allowing for better visibility during surgery. This approach to rhinoplasty requires a longer healing period and may cause visible scars. Closed rhinoplasty does not disturb the tissues as much as the open method, and heals quicker as well.

Will I have black eyes after surgery?

Bruising is to be expected at about 72 hours after rhinoplasty surgery is completed. Within seven to 10 days, the discoloration will disappear.

Why does it take a full year to see final rhinoplasty results?

Over the course of a year, the nose will adjust to the surgical changes. During this period, some swelling may persist, and the elasticity and thickness of the tissues, as well as the blood flow to the nasal region, may need to adjust.

Will nasal packing be used?

If the nose is being reduced in size, some light, medicated packing may be used.
