For many women, it is difficult going from the joyous time of childbirth to the dissatisfaction with the not-so perfect body that they are often left with. So to help these women regain their pre-pregnancy body contour, many plastic surgeons now offer "mommy makeovers" at their practices.

A mommy makeover is designed for the patient who wants more than one procedure performed at the same time, following childbirth; surgeries that commonly focus on the breasts and/or abdomen. However, the surgical actions are based on the effects that childbirth has taken on the patient, as well as their aesthetic desires.

According to Brent Moelleken, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board certified plastic surgeon of Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara, each woman’s surgical needs may vary: "The nature of her problem determines the best solution."

“…the surgical actions are based on the effects that childbirth has taken on the patient, as well as their aesthetic desires.”

Mommy Makeover Procedures

Here are the procedures that can be performed (alone or in combination) during mommy makeover surgery:

  • • Botox © injections
  • • Eyelid surgery
  • • Facelift surgery
  • • Breast augmentation
  • • Breast lift surgery
  • • Tummy tuck surgery
  • • Vaginoplasty
  • • Butt lift surgery
  • • Thigh lift surgery
  • • Liposuction

Dr. Moelleken, who has appeared on "Extreme Makeover" and in many publications including People, most often performs tummy tuck surgery and breast enhancement surgery (breast augmentation or breast lift) during his mommy makeovers. These areas change dramatically during pregnancy, thus requiring specific attention. However, he insists that, "The patient’s health, age, and the magnitude of the surgery determine which surgeries can be safely combined."

“A mommy makeover addresses the breasts and tummy, which are the areas most affected by pregnancy.”

Additionally, Michael A. Jazayeri, M.D., who sees about two to three mommy makeover patients a month, also performs these body contouring procedures, such as tummy tuck surgery and breast enlargement. The board certified Orange County plastic surgeon explained that at his practice, "A mommy makeover addresses the breasts and tummy, which are the areas most affected by pregnancy."

Dr. Jazayeri also adds, "The recommended anesthesia time for outpatient elective surgery is six hours. Therefore, those are typically the procedures which can be performed safely in that amount of time." Yet if a combination of surgeries cannot be completed in that setting, they should be performed separately.

Recovery After A Mommy Makeover

Recovery after a mommy makeover, no matter the procedure performed, usually includes some soreness and downtime. "If a patient undergoes a combination procedure and has a sitting job, they can go back to work in a week, with no heavy activity for a month. Swelling may take three to six months to subside, depending on the patient," Dr. Jazayeri explains.

While a mommy makeover can produce optimal, long-lasting results, Dr. Jazayeri notes that a patient: "Must also watch their weight. Plastic surgery is performed to bring the patient to a certain level; after surgery it is up to the patient to maintain their weight."

Wondering if you’re an ideal candidate? As with any cosmetic surgery, patients should be healthy and in a good frame of mind, and understand the risks and benefits of the surgery," says Dr. Moelleken. In addition, Dr. Jazayeri suggests that, "The appropriate patient has an ideal weight for their height."

“…if a combination of surgeries cannot be completed in that setting, they should be performed separately.”

Factors such as risks and benefits depend greatly on the procedures being performed. You will want to discuss your specific surgical plan with your physician to learn of all that is associated with your procedures, including what the predicted cost of mommy makeover surgery will be for you.
